On December 20th, 2006 the Pennsylvania gaming control board announced the selection of Sands Bethworks Gaming LLC, a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:LVS), for a state gaming license that will pave the way for the company to begin construction on a shopping dining, and entertainment complex located on the site of the former Bethlehem Steel plant in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This goal of Las Vegas Sands Corp. is to bring life back to this historic site, while respecting the fascinating and valuable legacy that it represents for the people of Pennsylvania and the world. As such, the architectural design of the casino and hotel complex will reflect the design and material palette of the existing structures.

In its first phase, the 126-acre development will feature a 300-room hotel, 200,000 square feet of retail space, a casino with 3,000 slot machines, and a variety of dining and entertainment options. The property will also be home to the National Museum of Industrial History, an arts and cultural center, a 50,000 square foot multi-purpose event center, and the broadcast home of the local PBS affiliate, Channel 39.

In the interest of acknowledging the remarkable legacy of Bethlehem Steel, Sands Bethworks will incorporate many of the remaining and historical attributes of the famed plant, including use of the massive ore crane as part of the casino entrance and the creation of lighting to emulate the “glow” of the plant during its heyday.

Sands Bethworks is scheduled to open the second quarter of 2009.
